Going away to college is a great experience and is often the first chance to really be yourself. So, how well do four blank walls (or two if you are sharing a room (or one if you are sharing with four others students)) and white sheets say who you are? Unless you are Patrick Bateman, not very well. So, how can you remodel and add individuality to your dorm on the almost non-existent budget of a college student? Here are a few starter ideas.

Photos

There is nothing like having a few photos from back home to really put you at ease. These days there are so many options for you to display pictures across your room. Whether you are going the traditional route and framing them on your desk, or thinking outside the box and creating a photo collage for a wall, you’ve got options.

Take a look at Pinterest, where you can find a ton of inspiring ideas and ways to make your room special with photos. Not only will it make your room look pretty sweet, you have a little something to remind you of where you’re from.

Lighting

Let’s be honest, those boring light fixtures in the dorm are just not going to cut it. They tend to have an impersonal quality about them, like you’re in a cafeteria and not a place where you live. Lights can definitely set the tone for your room. You could go for the option of having icicle lights strewn across or have a really cool floor lamp. The possibilities are pretty much limitless.

Sites like Ikea have great choices to help you find a creative and fun way to make your space into your own. Customizing your room with lights will certainly make you feel at home in no time.

Window Coverings

Most dorms come standard with blinds. More often than not, they are the standard plain kind. A  great way to add a personal touch is to get window coverings that really make your personality stand out. College has a great emphasis on sports usually. So if you want to show off your team pride, putting up some window coverings sporting your favorite team is just the ticket.

Places like Budget Blinds can help you take your room to the next level. If you want to show your team pride in a cool and stylish way, this will absolutely fit the bill.

Posters

Having posters on your walls will definitely help with making your dorm look a bit more colorful. Having plain white walls can be very bland so it is good to put up a poster or two to add a little pizazz. Sites like Art.com carry a variety of different types of posters ranging from singers, places and athletes to animals and landscapes.

Hanging posters can assist in setting the tone for your room. Whether you prefer a relaxed environment or a vibrant and busy one, posters can give you a helping hand in that department. You even have the option to get a poster in a canvas format. It’s an easy and decorative way to help spruce up your dorm and really put your taste in the mix.

Bedding

Having comfortable sheets is definitely a must-have; after all, one of the biggest if not most important functions of a dorm room is for sleeping. Nothing is more helpful when it comes to sleeping than creating a comfortable space for you to rest in. Make sure you are catching up on some ZZZ’s in bedding that you love.

Anna’s Linens offers a great selection of bedding, so you can definitely find something there that you will be sure to enjoy. On top of a great selection, they have prices that will be even more enjoyable, so you can sleep well knowing that you got a killer deal.

Going away to college is an experience that will impact you for a lifetime. Though it is an exciting time in your life, it is understandable if you feel a little homesick from time to time. Having a dorm that reflects your personality and has a few touches from home can help you. By adding lighting, window coverings, photos, posters and bedding that match your tastes can help you bring comforts from home to your new life in school. Following these tips can help you in your transition and make your college experience one of the best things to remember.
