Do you like making videos, changing the college world for the greater good and the advancement of our education, and money? Well then listen up because there is a contest that is calling your name.

According to this press release, Herman Miller Inc., in collaboration with their knowledge partner International Interior Design Association (IIDA), has launched its sixth annual video contest.

They want to hear from us students “What’s Next In Learning Spaces?” And we can show them with the help of a video camera and some good old imagination. The contest is asking students to capture the ideal learning space that will support talents and skills that will be beneficial to success in their future endeavors.

We as students are on campus every day, are the ones currently learning and are going to have to go out in the world soon, so who better to help future generations than us? This video contest is giving you a chance to show how you think a learning environment can best be altered to help students not only in their future workplace, but also in life.

“Higher education continues to more intensely focus on student experience, and drive the innovation that will enable students to thrive on campus, and ultimately, in the workplace,” said Jeff Vredevoogd, Director of Herman Miller Education. “The student voice is critical.”

This is your chance to make your opinion count, and have your voice heard. We know the grievances that come with school, and we also know what works, and what we think will work, so let’s show them!

Get some friends together, get a camera of some sort (heck, your phone will do fine) and get to work on your video. If you have no clue on how to edit film or add in cool effects and music, why not pay a visit to the digital arts classrooms and see if you can scout out an aspiring film maker to help you out?

“This contest will help us – as researchers, designers, faculty and administrators – better understand how students use existing spaces and, in their eyes, what will make on-campus spaces even more valuable as they pursue lifelong learning,” Vredevoodg said.

College is expensive, so let’s help transform the learning environment to get more bang for our buck.

Wondering how the contest works? Let me give you the inside scoop.

The Student Video Contest is open to any student that is currently attending a two or four year college/university in the U.S. and Canada. Your videos will be accepted from now until March 27, 2015 at 5 p.m. EST, so mark that date in your planner!

Representatives from Herman Miller and IIDA will then choose three finalists who were best able to create a video that was original, sparking with imagination and creativity, and relevant to the theme of improving on the learning spaces. After this narrowing down of the videos, there will be a public vote that will then determine the rankings of the top three contestants.

What will they be walking away with? On top of giving a new perspective of what the future of education learning environments should incorporate, first place will receive $2,500, second place will get $1,500, and third $1,000. Think of all the textbooks you could buy (or the awesome shopping spree you could take!).

Regardless what you end up spending it on, it’s safe to say that any of us would be grateful to be in possession of these cash prizes. #BrokeCollegeLyfe

Finalists will also be invited to join Herman Miller in Chicago at the 50th annual Society of College and University Planning conference in July 2015. The students will be able to share their videos, participate in a panel, and further explore “What’s Next In Learning Spaces?” Sounds pretty cool, huh?

You can also follow Herman Miller on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest to keep up with the latest updates of the competition.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get those creative juices flowing and get cracking on your video. Good luck!
