Dolce & Gabbana Celebrate Motherhood
The theme for this year’s Dolce & Gabbana Fall/Winter line was centered around the beauty of motherhood. Attendees were given pamphlets with the lyrics of Edoardo Benato’s “Viva La Mamma” translated into a variety of languages. Models strutted delicate pink designs and intrinsic lace patterns, many adorned with large red roses and child-like doodles similar to that of Angelina Jolie’s infamous wedding veil.
Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana turned drawings by their nieces and nephews into the colorful fabric used for the design.
Dresses were also adorned with images of the Virgin Mary cradling infant Jesus and “I Love You Mamma” written in English, Italian and French across jackets, dresses and skirts. In an exclusive interview, model Ashleigh Good spoke with “Vogue“ about walking the runway with her newborn daughter Emily.
“The collection is based on mothers and children, which is such an important part of life. I almost cried when they told me, and my skirt says ‘I love my beautiful mama’ in Italian!” she said.
The collection conveys a romantic, religious feel, eliciting feelings of old school Italian culture, which is no surprise considering the Italian brand’s rich tradition of honoring family. It was also a refreshing change of pace to see children and models with pregnant bellies strut the runway, rather than just the usual, stick thin figures draped in the designer threads.
