Starting school can be a stressful and adventurous time in your life. And when you add a new apartment into the mix, the idea of having to furnish the apartment starts to invade your brain. Depending on the school you attend, you could be surrounded by loads and loads of school spirit or you could not. In the event that you are, you may want your apartment to express how much you love your college.

Don’t think that this article is going to be about ordering a bunch of things with the mascot on it or buying only your school colors and nothing else, so that your apartment looks like your school just threw up all over it. You still want a classy environment for yourself and for your guests that will potentially come over. You are the one going to that college, you know how your school shows its school spirit and expresses itself. You have to figure out what types of things fit that mold and, most importantly, what types of ideas work best for you to portray what you want. Making sure that you shine through with your interior decorating is what is going to make your apartment stand out.

Below are some ways you can show your school spirit in your apartment, with the incorporation of furniture, sheets or just small touches that even the most oblivious person will see.

1. Wall Décor: Most people go straight for high-class art or the typical photo frames. Or college students usually go out and buy giant posters of their favorite movies, TV shows, or bands. If you want to show your school spirit in a simple way at first, whether it be in your own bedroom or in your living room for your guests to see, show some school love on your walls. Typically most colleges give out school flags, normally average sized. If you are a school athletics fan or if you play on a college team you can touch up your wall with a school sports team pennant.

2. Blankets/Loungewear: College stores usually house more random school spirit items than you could ever dream of, including a large blanket and school loungewear. Placing the nice fleece school blanket at the end of your bed or setting it on the couch can be a simple touch. If your school doesn’t happen to sell these things, you can always buy blankets and other items of that variety in your school colors.

Loungewear is usually what people buy besides the typical t-shirt or tank. Schools always have sleep/loungewear, like sweatpants and sweatshirts, so those are not hard to find and show off while in your apartment.

3. Dining: Mugs, cups, etc. Everyone has gotten a cup of some sort while in college, usually plastic and most likely from the student government association or from the student activity center. Is a wine glass with your school mascot on it a classy way to go? Well I suppose not, but it is YOUR apartment after all. No one said you needed to be fancy with it. When you have friends over, I highly doubt anyone is going to care if they are drinking out of cups decked out in your school colors or if they are drinking out of a $300 cup set.

4. Pictures: Everyone loves seeing pictures of themselves having fun with their friends and family. That is precisely why you see most apartments with tons of pictures displayed in random places, either on side tables, hanging up, or along mantels. School stores usually have picture frames for sale. Those picture frames usually have some detail of the school colors or the mascot, or even a saying your school is known for.

College is meant for self-discovery and making new friends. Why wouldn’t you want to document all the memories with a frame that is memorabilia all by itself? The picture itself could show school spirit also, especially if you and your friends are flaunting your school logo.

5. Bedroom: If you really want to go all out with the school spirit, what better way to do that than to buy a comforter — not just any comforter, though. I mean a comforter that has your school all over it.

But if your school doesn’t offer that kind of thing, go to any furniture store and walk over to the bedding section. You should be able to find a comforter or sheets in your school colors or at least a version of it.

Whether you have school spirit or you don’t, representing your college doesn’t have to be extreme. It should honestly be something you WANT to do. You can do it in small doses or in large doses. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable, because at the end of the day, it is still your apartment.
