Commuter's Take On The First Week Of College

By Meaghan Potter on September 2, 2013

I think everyone can agree that this first week of college went by painfully slow and that this long Labor Day weekend was much needed. People are still in a summer mode just wanting to meet people, go out and explore the town for themselves.

Every year, to begin every freshman’s journey at UA, UAlbany hold a candle lighting ceremony.

UAlbany did a great job of planning events for students to do so and get into the Great Danes spirit! But from someone like me who is a commuter “Welcome week” did not do much for me except take 200+ dollars out of my pocket for books. I did meet a lot of kids in my classes and make plenty of new friends. But school is a totally different reality when you’re a commuter.

My mind set every morning is get up extra early to beat traffic, go to class, eat something in the Campus Center then finish my last classes and try to beat rush hour traffic going back home. Where as a freshmen living on campus has a mind set of roll out of bed on time, drag yourself to class, eat at the dinning hall, take a nap and then chill with your suite mates for the night.

There are pros to living at home,

1. Air conditioning

2. Home cooked meals

3. A private bathroom

And cons to living on campus

1. Shared dorms saunas

2. Same food every day

3. Shared bathrooms

All in all the pros and con cancel either out in one way or another it just depends what your priorities are. I definitely feel left out of the whole room mate/ suite mate aspect  but I can always stay the weekend with some friends and get that feeling. Commuting is the best of both worlds and what some may prefer. It may not be fulfilling the whole college experience but it’s pretty close. This first week put everyone into reality check to get focused as well as be excited for the year to come!
